The semifinals of the middle school girls’ soccer tournament were held on Thursday as the top-seeded ATMS Lady Bulldogs faced off against the NERMS Lady Huskies. ATMS defeated Uwharrie Ridge in the first round of the play on Tuesday, while NERMS took down RMS.

This looked to be a good one from the start as both the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Huskies came out aggressive. ATMS took charge and quickly took their first shot on goal, but missed. The Bulldogs continued to find their way to goal but struggled to score against the NERMS defense. The Lady Huskies made their run at the goal but could not score as the score remained tied at 0-0. With fourteen minutes left in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs broke the tie and took a 1-0 lead. Maggie Messner followed a blocked shot and put it in the back of the net for the first goal of the day. Neither team could score the rest the half as the Lady Bulldogs took a 1-0 halftime lead.

The second half of play was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score against the opposing teams’ defense. The Bulldogs kept the ball on their side of the field for most of the have and had several good looks at the goal but could not score. When the Huskies got the ball on their side of the field they did not waste the opportunity as they put several shots on goal. ATMS’ keeper was there to make the save every time to keep the Bulldogs in control. This one looked like the Bulldogs were going to emerge victoriously but the Huskies had other ideas. NERMS’ Aaliyah Loveday put the ball into the back of the net with just over two minutes left to tie the game 1-1. Neither team could break the tie before time expired sending this one into overtime.

After another tough battle in overtime, the Lady Bulldogs would pick up the win 2-1 after Izabella Ringley scored at the halfway mark of the period. ATMS advances to face SAMS in the championship game.
