Comets sweep Eastern Guilford in three

The Asheboro Blue Comets hosted Mid-Piedmont Conference opponent Eastern Guilford on Thursday. Asheboro entered the game 6-2 in conference play and 12-6 overall on the season.

Eastern Guilford opened set one with a quick 2-0 lead before the Comets battled back to take a 3-2 lead. A serving error on the Comets allowed the Wildcats to tie the set at 3-3. Asheboro pushed ahead for a two-point lead, but Eastern Guilford hung around. The two teams traded points back and forth as neither could take a lead larger than two. The Wildcats were leading 12-10 when a kill from Diamond McDowell cut the lead to one for the Comets. Points continued to be traded back and forth until the set was tied 15-15. Asheboro rattled off four straight points for a 19-15 lead. Eastern Guilford cut the lead to three before the Comets closed out the set for a 25-17 win.

The Wildcats once again took an early lead but the Comets quickly took control for a 3-1 lead behind a kill from McDowell and an ace from Briley Brewer. Another kill from McDowell gave the Comets a 5-2 lead as they started to pull away. Eastern Guilford cut the lead to four but struggled to keep up with the Comets. Asheboro quickly turned their 9-5 lead into a 14-5 lead before the Wildcats picked up their next point. The Comets answered with an 8-0 run for a 22-6 lead. The Wildcats picked up one more point before the Comets scored the next three points to take the set 25-7.

Asheboro once again fell behind 2-0 to the Wildcats in set three before a kill from McDowell tied the set at 2-2. The set was not tied for long as Eastern Guilford took a 5-2 lead. Asheboro battled back to tie the set at five-all before the Wildcats pulled back in front for a 9-5 lead. The Comets were not going to let this one slip away as they tied the set at nine all before taking an 11-9 lead. Asheboro never trailed again as they took set three with a 25-20 win that was capped off with a kill from Caroline Langdon. Asheboro took the match three sets to none.
