Comets withstand Bulldogs for the win

Randolph County volleyball action came to Asheboro on Tuesday with the Lady Blue Comets hosting the Trinity Lady Bulldogs. Asheboro came into Tuesday’s match-up 0-2 on the season while Trinity was 2-1.

Trinity took the early lead in set one, but the Comets quickly tied the set at one apiece. The Lady Bulldogs pushed ahead for a 5-2 lead before Asheboro cut it to one with a tip from Leah Reid and a ferocious kill from Diamond McDowell. Moments later, Caroline Langdon tied the set at six-all for the Comets with an ace. The teams traded points until a 10-10 tie when Trinity took the lead for good. The Bulldogs scored six straight points before a tip from Reid ended the run. Trinity continued pushing forward taking a 20-12 lead before an 8-3 run by Asheboro trimmed the lead down to three. The Bulldogs held on for a 25-20 set win.

The Lady Bulldogs had another strong start picking up the first three points of the second set. Asheboro stayed close and eventually took their first lead of the night at 7-6. Neither team could take a solid lead as they traded points back and forth. Trinity banded together to tie and take the lead from the Blue Comets for an 11-10 advantage. Points continued to be traded back and forth before Asheboro got out in front to take a 23-19 lead. The Blue Comets looked to be on their way to a victory, but Trinity rallied to tie the set at 23 all. A back and forth battle ensued once again before the Comets stole the set with a 29-27 set win to even the match at one set each.

Asheboro used the momentum from their previous set win to jump out to an early 5-1 lead over the Bulldogs. Trinity tried to catch up, but the Lady Comets answered every time the Bulldogs scored. Reid and Briley Brewer picked up a pair of hits to give the Comets a 10-4 lead. The Lady Bulldogs cut the lead to one behind a strong serve from Gracie Ballard, but a serving error pushed the lead back to two for the Comets. Asheboro stayed in front for the next few minutes thanks to a kill from McDowell, but the Bulldogs soon tied the set at 15 all. Trinity took their first lead of the set, but it did not last long as Asheboro regained the lead on a kill from Reid and a block from Brewer. The set was tied again moments later before a monster kill from McDowell gave the lead back to the Comets. This one went down to the wire, but the Blue Comets emerged victorious with a 25-23 set win.

The Blue Comet’s once again jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before the Bulldogs had the set tied at four-all. Points were traded back and forth until the set was tied at six all. A hit from Kesley Nance gave the Comets an 8-6 lead as they extended their lead to take control of the set. Reid and Brewer picked up a pair of kills to push the Comets lead out even further as the Bulldogs continued to fall behind. Trinity never quit as they responded with a run of their own to cut the lead down to four. The Bulldogs continued to fight until they had the set tied at 18 all. A kill from McDowell ended the run, but it did not stop Bulldogs from trying to steal a win. With the set tied at 21 all, Trinity went on a 4-1 run to close out the set for a 25-23 win. They tied the match at two sets each forcing a fifth set of play.

Asheboro took charge in the final set of play securing their match win with a 15-7 set win over the Bulldogs.
