Cougars pick up win on Senior night

It was Senior night at Southwestern Randolph High School as the Lady Cougars hosted cross-town and Mid-Piedmont Conference rivals the Asheboro Blue Comets. In the first meeting between these two, it was the Cougars who came away with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Comets. Southwestern Randolph entered Tuesday’s contest 9-1 in Mid-Piedmont Conference play and 19-2 overall on the season, while Asheboro was 9-2 in conference play and 15-7 overall on the season.

Set number one was a back and forth battle as both teams wanted to take the early advantage in this one. The Blue Comets picked up the first point of the set, but the Cougars quickly tied things up at one-all. Southwestern Randolph pulled ahead for a 4-2 lead before a kill from Diamond McDowell cut the lead to one. After tying the set at seven all, Payton Shiflet served an ace to put the Cougars back on top.  Asheboro retied the set as this one continued to go back and forth. Neither team could build a lead larger than one until the Blue Comets closed out the set with a 4-0 run. Asheboro took set one 25-21.

Riding the momentum from their previous set win, the Blue Comets opened set number two with a 6-0 run. Southwestern Randolph responded with three straight points before two back to back monster kills from McDowell pushed the Comets’ lead to 8-3. The Comets’ lead would not last long as the Cougars used a 6-1 run to tie the set at nine all. Out of a time out, the Cougars scored to take a 10-9 lead and that was all they needed to swing the momentum in their direction. Asheboro could not get closer than one down the stretch as the Cougars outscored the Comets 15-9 to close out the set. Southwestern Randolph evened the match with a 25-18 win in set number two.

Asheboro once again claimed the first point of the set, but the Cougars quickly jumped out in front and never looked back. The Cougars led 4-2 before the Comets picked up their second point of the set. Asheboro managed to cut the lead to two at 7-5 before Shiflet killed the ball over the net to push the Cougars’ lead back out. Southwestern Randolph made an 8-2 run midway through the set to extend their lead to 16-8. The Cougars capped off the run with a pair of powerful kills from Ashton Maness. The Comets cut the lead to six three times, but could never get any closer than that. Southwestern Randolph took a 2-1 advantage with a 25-16 win in set three.

Southwestern Randolph finally got the first point of a set in set number four, but after tying the set at four-all it was the Comets to took an early lead. Asheboro pushed ahead for an 8-5 lead before the Cougars stormed back to tie the set at eight-all. Southwestern Randolph picked up the next point to retake the lead and never relinquished it. Asheboro cut into the lead several times, but Southwestern Randolph always answered extending the lead back out. Josie Allred picked up a block to give the Cougars a 21-15 lead late in the set. Asheboro trimmed the lead to two at 22-20, but the Cougars scored the next three points to secure the victory. The Lady Cougars won set four 25-20.
