Cougars sweep Tigers to stay undefeated

As one of the last three undefeated volleyball teams in the county, Southwestern Randolph traveled to Randleman on Thursday for their first contest against the Tigers and put their undefeated season on the line. The Lady Cougars came into the game a perfect 5-0 on the season having not lost a set with a 15-0 set win record. Randleman entered the game 1-2 on the season.

Southwestern Randolph jumped out to an early 2-1 lead behind a block from Josie Allred, but Randleman stayed close taking a 7-4 lead moments later. A kill from Allred and a hit from Payton Shiflet tied the set at seven all. The set was tied once more at 8-8 before Southwestern Randolph went on a 5-0 run for a 13-8 lead. The Tigers battled back, cutting the lead to three on a tip from Ceci Carter. The Cougars forged ahead extending their lead to 20-12 before another hit from Carter pulled the Tigers within seven. Carter added another hit late in the set, but it was not enough to bring the Tigers back into the set. Southwestern Randolph took set one 25-14.

Randleman started strong in the second set taking a 2-1 lead before the Cougars had the set tied at three-all. The Tigers broke the tie with a hit from Carter, but Southwestern Randolph retied the set before taking the lead. Shiflet picked up a hit to give the lead to the Cougars as they pushed ahead for a 14-5 lead. Ashton Maness picked up a kill to give the Cougars their fourteenth point before Randleman picked up three straight points to cut into the lead. Hannah Hinshaw recorded a kill for the Tigers during the short run. Southwestern Randolph extended its lead to ten at 21-11 behind several kills from Maness. The Tigers tried to battle their way back into the set, but the Cougars quickly ended the set picking up their second straight win. Southwestern Randolph won set two 25-14.

The Lady Cougars were looking to put the Tigers way in the third set as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Randleman was not going to go away quietly as they battled to tie the set at five all behind a kill from Carter and a block from Hinshaw. After the set was tied twice more, the Tigers took their largest lead of the night at 13-8. Hinshaw, Carter, and Aubrey Maness were key in sparking the Tigers’ run. Southwestern Randolph was not going to let the Tigers blemish their perfect season as they rallied to tie the set at thirteen all before taking the lead for good. Meredith Smith took over the serving duties for the Cougars as they made their run and made it difficult for the Tigers to break her serve. Randleman got as close as two but could come up with enough points to tie the set. Southwestern Randolph outscored the Tigers 8-4 down the stretch to keep their perfect season intact. The Cougars got the win 25-19 to sweep the Tigers three sets to none.

Ashton Maness paced the Cougars with 10 kills and five digs, while Payton Shiflet finsihed with seven kills and 13 digs. Meredith Smith notched 20 digs and four aces and Peyton LeRoy recorded five kills, 21 assists and five aces.
