Eagles fall at home to North Rowan

In the final game of a varsity doubleheader, the Uwharrie Charter Eagles faced off against the North Rowan Cavaliers. Uwharrie Charter came into Friday’s game 4-4 in conference play and 6-7 overall on the season. The Eagles are coming off a 78-56 win on the road at Albemarle earlier in the week.

North Rowan quickly took control of this game with back to back buckets early in the first. It would take almost three minutes for the Eagles to score, but Garrett McCollum drained a three to cut the lead to one. The Cavaliers answered with a three of their own on the other end before adding another bucket to take a 9-3 lead. Uwharrie Charter cut the lead to four with a bucket from Ashton Troutman. An out of bounds alley-oop dunk put the Cavaliers in front by six. Dalon Arrington answered back with a three for the Eagles to trim the lead to three. North Rowan closed the quarter with a bucket down low. After one-quarter of play, Uwharrie Charter trailed 13-8 to North Rowan.

The Eagles opened the second quarter with another three from Arrington before the Cavaliers scored back to back buckets. The three from Arrington would be the Eagles only field goal of the quarter. The Eagles connected at the line as Arrington and Coleton Christian combined to go four for four. The Cavalier built a comfortable lead with an 8-0 run midway through the quarter. Arrington ended the run for a moment with a pair of free throws, but the Cavs added two more buckets for a 29-17 lead. Troutman scored the final points of the quarter for the Eagles with a pair of free throws. North Rowan drained a three and added a putback bucket to take a 34-19 lead over Uwharrie Charter at the half.

The Cavaliers extended their lead to seventeen at the start of the third quarter, but the Eagles answered back. Troutman knocked down a free-throw before McCollum drained his second three of the night to cut the lead to thirteen. A pair of free throws from the Cavaliers pushed the lead back to fifteen early in the quarter. Troutman went two for two at the line for the Eagles to chip away at the lead. North Rowan added a bucket and a free throw to take a 41-25 lead over the Eagles. Uwharrie finally picked up a bucket against the tough Cavalier defense before they answered with a pair of free throws. Arrington picked up three points the old fashioned way to cut the lead back to thirteen, but the Cavaliers quickly put the game out of reach. North Rowan used a 12-3 run including a deep three at the buzzer to take a 55-33 lead over Uwharrie Charter into the fourth quarter.

Uwharrie Charter tried to find a way through the North Rowan defense but the Cavaliers scored three quick points to added to their already commanding lead. The Cavaliers scored three more points on a free-throw and a putback on the rebound to take a 61-33 lead over the Eagles. Uwharrie Charter’s first points of the quarter would not come until the 3:19 mark when McCollum scored on a jumper. The Eagles added another bucket moments later to cut the lead to twenty-four with just under three minutes left to play. Uwharrie Charter found their scoring late in the quarter, but it was too late. The Eagles ended up falling 69-44 to North Rowan at home.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Dalon Arrington with 15 points. Ashton Troutman finished with 13 points, while Garrett McCollum added eight.
