Lady Tigers fall in title game

After a long regular season, teams from across the county opened postseason play this week with conference tournaments. The Randleman Lady Tigers earned the top seed in the PAC-7 tournament aft finishing the conference regular season undefeated at 12-0. The Lady Tigers have only suffered one loss this season and that was back in December against Southwestern Randolph in the title game of the Christmas tournament. With being the top seed in the tournament, Randleman earned a first-round bye before taking down Providence Grove in the semifinals. The Tigers entered the championship game against the High Point Andrews Red Raiders on Saturday 21-1 on the season.

High Point Andrews got on the board first, but the Lady Tigers quickly jumped out in front with back to back buckets from Veronica Marlow and Elizabeth York. After the Red Raiders tied the game at 4-4, Gracyn Hall scored on a putback before adding a free-throw moments later. The Tigers would not stay in front for long as Andrews used a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Hall cut the lead to one with a bucket down low before swishing a three to give the Tigers a 12-10 lead. The Red Raiders scored the final bucket of the quarter to leave the game tied at 12-12.

Emma Marlow put the Tigers up by two at the start of the second, but the Red Raiders answered right back. Hall drilled her second three of the afternoon this time from the right corner to give the Tigers a 17-14 lead. After a free-throw from the Raiders, Elizabeth York drained a three to put Randleman up by five. A 6-0 run from the Red Raiders gave them a one-point lead, but Veronica Marlow scored on the other end giving the lead back to the Tigers. High Point Andrews outscored the Tigers 10-4 down the stretch for a 31-26 halftime lead.

Randleman came out strong in the third quarter scoring the first six points of the quarter. The Tigers led by one when the Red Raiders knocked down a three at the four-minute mark to retake the lead. A pair of free throws from Taylor Gantt tied the game at 34-34 before back to back buckets gave the lead back to the Raiders. Emma Marlow knocked down a free-throw and Gantt scored on a drive to close out the quarter. After three complete quarters, Randleman trailed High Point Andrews 38-37.

The Red Raiders pushed their lead to three at the start of the fourth, but the Tigers answered with a bucket from Emma Marlow. A three-point play by the Raiders put them up by five before a strong drive to the hoop by Gantt cut the lead to two. The Raiders picked up a three from the corner, but Hall posted up her defender and scored to cut the lead to three. Gantt added a bucket to trim the lead one before the Raiders scored on a fastbreak to extend the lead out to three. The lead was cut to two on a free-throw from Veronica Marlow, but the Red Raiders answered with a free-throw of their own. York scored down low to trim the lead to one before the Tigers were forced to foul. The Red Raiders made both free throws to take a 51-48 lead with under twenty seconds left to play. The Tigers would not get another shot off and fell 51-48 to the Red Raiders.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Gracyn Hall with 15 points. Veronica Marlow finished with ten points, while Taylor Gantt added eight. Elizabeth York notched seven and Emma Marlow chipped in five.
