A veteran player is a crucial piece to any sports team. They may not always be the star player, but they know how the game is played and they get their job done night in and night out. One Randolph County player has stepped into this role for her team and without her, the outlook for the season could’ve been a whole lot different. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Asheboro’s, Tanaesha Ellison.

Ellison, a junior guard, has helped lead the Lady Blue Comets to a 7-3 start to the season. She is a three-year varsity starter and a crafty player who can score the ball but also lock in on defense picking up several steals a game. She has been a key piece to this year’s Blue Comets team scoring in double figures in all but one game this season. She is averaging 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.4 steals, and 2.6 assists per game this season. She has career averages of 10.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 1.9 assists.

In the last three games, she is averaging 18.3 points per game. On Tuesday, Ellison finished with 19 points in the Blue Comets Mid-Piedmont Conference win on the road at Eastern Guilford. After a couple of days off, the Comets returned to the floor against Wheatmore in the opening round of the Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational where Ellison poured in 19 points and picked up multiple steals. She led them to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday where they faced cross-town rival the Southwestern Randolph Cougars. Although the Comets fell to the Cougars on Saturday, Ellison did everything she could to help the Comets stay in the game during the first three-quarters of play. She finished the night with 17 points to lead the Comets. Ellison is a hardworking student-athlete who has carved out her role for this Blue Comets’ team. She will be a key part as they move into the conference season and look to make a run at the state playoffs.

Congratulations to Tanaesha Ellison on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
