Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Tatum Smith

When the postseason rolls around teams rely on their veteran players to make an impact. One Randolph County athlete has made an impact all season and has carried her play into the postseason. Her team has had an incredible postseason run so far, and her leadership on the field is a key part of it. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Providence Grove’s, Tatum Smith.

Smith, a senior third baseman, has led the Lady Patriots into the third round of the 2A state softball playoffs with her strong play and leadership. After helping Providence Grove to the PAC-7 tournament championship last week, Smith and the rest of the Lady Patriots geared up for the state playoffs. They opened with a 4-2 first-round win over conference rival Randleman on Tuesday. Smith led on the defensive end, finishing with a 100% fielding percentage. On Friday, the Patriots posted a 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Midway behind a huge play from Smith. After struggling at the plate in the last couple of games, Smith came up big with a three-run double in the top of the seventh as the Patriots rallied for the win. She finished the game with two hits.

Providence Grove will need Smith to use the momentum from Friday’s game on Tuesday as they face the Eastern Randolph Wildcats in the third round of the state playoffs. As one of five seniors, Smith is a crucial part of this Patriots’ roster and can be the difference maker as the Patriots move through the rest of the postseason.

Congratulations to Tatum Smith on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
