RMS rallies for volleyball title

With the suspension of athletics beginning on March 13 at 11:59 PM, the Randolph County School System decided to move up the semifinals and finals of the middle school volleyball tournament. The tournament took place on Friday with the SWRMS Cougars, SAMS Comets, RMS Tigers, and ATMS Bulldogs battling it out for a spot in the championship game.

SWRMS picked up a straight set victory in the first semifinal match of the afternoon defeating SAMS 25-16 and 25-18. The second semifinal went down to the wire between RMS and ATMS, but the Tigers emerged victorious with a 2-1 match wins after picking up set wins of 25-22 in the first and 15-12 in the third.

With the championship match set, the Lady Cougars and the Lady Tigers took the floor for battle and battle they did. RMS took an early 3-0 lead in the first set and led until the Cougars tied the set at 6-6. The teams traded points during the next few possessions until the Tigers took a 12-9 lead. SWRMS cut the lead to one at 12-11, but that would be as close as they could get the rest of the set. RMS took set one 25-20 to lead the match one set to none.

The Lady Cougars struck first in the second set, but RMS quickly recovered before taking an 8-5 lead. This one stayed close with the set three times, once at 8-8, once at 10-10, and then again at 12-12. From there, the Cougars took control and never looked back. SWRMS outscored the Tigers 13-6 to close out the set for a 25-18 win and tied the match at one set apiece.

It all came down to a third set to decide the champion of this year’s tournament. RMS took the first point of the set, but SWRMS answered with a 6-1 run for a 6-2 lead. The Cougars maintained in control and led by as many as six before momentum swung in favor of the Tigers. RMS trailed 13-7 when they began to rally. They picked up a couple of points to cut the lead to three, but the Cougars picked up match point for a 14-10 lead. When the championship looked to be the Cougars’, RMS dug deep and scored the next six points to steal the set and the title. RMS defeated SWRMS 16-14 int he final set to win the match two sets to one. This is the Tigers’ second straight volleyball tournament championship. The Tigers and Cougars were crowned co-champions of the regular season along with the ATMS Bulldogs.
