SAMS, Uwharrie Ridge split doubleheader

In their first home game of the season, the SAMS Comets hosted the Uwharrie Ridge Timberwolves on Thursday.

The boys opened the doubleheader with a great game as the SAMS Comets pulled away for a 55-28 win. The first quarter was a back and forth battle that saw the Comets come out on top with a 7-6 lead by the end. The teams traded buckets to start the second quarter before the Comets knocked down back to back buckets for a 13-8 lead. The Timberwolves trimmed the lead to three but soon fell behind by ten after a 7-0 run by the Comets to close out the quarter. At the half, SAMS led 20-12.

Uwharrie Ridge scored the first bucket of the third quarter before SAMS scored ten straight for a 30-12 lead. The Timberwolves picked up a pair of free throws and a bucket to cut the lead to fourteen midway through the quarter. The Comets never let up knocking down two more buckets including a three for a 35-16 lead. Uwharrie answered with a three of their own followed by a two-point bucket to get the lead back to fourteen. After three-quarters of play, the Comets were in control 35-21. The fourth quarter was all SAMS as they outscored the Timberwolves 20-7 to cruise to the win.

Camden Walker led the Comets with 15 points, while Elijah Woodle finished with 12. TJ Mark added eight. Adam Roberts led the Timberwolves with ten points, while Cameron Davis chipped in eight.

In the final game of the doubleheader, the Lady Timberwolves held off a late rally by the Comets for a 26-21 win. Uwharrie Ridge opened the game with an 8-0 run before the Comets got on the board with a free throw and a bucket. The Timberwolves ended the quarter with a bucket for a 10-3 lead. SAMS cut the lead to five before the Timberwolves knocked down back to back buckets including a three for a 15-5 lead. The Lady Comets closed out the quarter with four straight points. At the half, Uwharrie Ridge led 15-9.

SAMS opened the third quarter with a three to cut the lead to three before the Timberwolves answered to push the lead to five. By the end of the quarter, the Timberwolves held a 20-15 advantage over the Comets. Uwharrie Ridge pushed their lead to seven at the start of the fourth quarter, but back to back buckets from SAMS trimmed the lead back down to three. The two teams traded buckets to leave the lead at three before a pair of free throws sealed the win for the Timberwolves.

Mackenzie King and Kenzie Martin led the Timberwolves with nine points each, while Savannah Hollemune finished with four. Addison Allen led the Comets with eight points, while Ariana Hayes notched six.
