UCA dominant in win over South Davidson

Uwharrie Charter opened the week at home against South Davidson on Tuesday. The Eagles who were coming off a big win over Gray Stone Day last week, entered Tuesday’s game 2-4 in conference play and 4-7 overall on the season.

The UCA boys opened their game the same way the girls did with a quick 5-0 run. Coleton Christian put the Eagles on the board with a putback before Dawson Dunn drained a three from the left win. South Davidson scored their first bucket down low, but the Eagles soon blew the game wide open. Uwharrie Charter used a 20-1 run to take a 24-3 lead over the Wildcats. The Eagles knocked down three three-pointers during the run including ones from Zane Caudle and Garrett McCollum. The Wildcats ended the run with a floater in the lane, but the Wildcats pushed their lead back to twenty before the end of the quarter. After one complete quarter of play, Uwharrie Charter led South Davidson 25-5.

South Davidson scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but the Eagles answered right back to keep their lead at twenty. After another bucket from the Wildcats, Dylan Wheatley drained a three off an inbounds pass to give the Eagles a 30-9 lead. South Davidson found another bucket before the Eagles used a 7-0 run to push their lead to twenty-six. Jordan Harrison drilled a three during the run for the Eagles. A Wildcat bucket ended the run, but only for a moment as the Eagles scored five straight for a 42-13 lead. The Wildcats went on a small run of their own outscoring the Eagles 7-0 during a stretch late in the quarter. Uwharrie Charter ended up closing out the quarter with a 7-1 run for a 49-21 halftime lead.

The Wildcats came out of the half strong outscoring the Eagles 8-3 during the first few minutes. Uwharrie Charter responded quickly using a 10-0 run to take a 62-29 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter. South Davidson ended the run with a bucket in the paint before the Eagles scored six straight including a free-throw after a technical foul on the Wildcats. A three from the Wildcats ended the Eagles’ short run with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. South Davidson outscored the Eagles 6-2 with a pair of threes to close out the third quarter. After three-quarters of play, Uwharrie Charter held a commanding 70-37 lead over the Wildcats.

The final quarter of play opened South Davidson scoring back to back buckets to cut the lead to twenty-nine. With just over six minutes left to play, the Wildcats were called for another technical foul sending McCollum to the line for the Eagles. McCollum knocked down the pair giving the Eagles a 72-41 lead. Uwharrie Charter added four more points for a 76-41 lead before the Wildcats scored on the other end. The teams each traded a free-throw to leave the lead at thirty-three with just over two minutes left to play. The Eagles closed out the game with a 7-2 run including an alley-oop lay-in from Ashton Troutman. Uwharrie Charter cruised to an 84-46 win over South Davidson.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Jordan Harrison with 14 points. Cam Fordham finished with 13 points, while Dalon Arrington and Dylan Wheatley each notched 11 points.
