Warriors cruise to second round win

After defeating Richlands High School in round one of the 2A State Volleyball Playoffs, the top-seeded Wheatmore Lady Warriors hosted the sixteenth-seeded South Columbus Lady Stallions in the second round on Tuesday. Wheatmore entered the game 24-2 on the season.

Wheatmore jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first set before the Stallions could pick up their second point of the night. Hope Turbyfill laid down a kill to give the Warriors a 9-3 advantage early in the set. South Columbus picked up three straight points to cut the lead to five, but the Lady Warriors responded pushing the lead out to eight. The Stallions got as close as ten before the Warriors put this one away. After taking a 16-6 lead, Wheatmore tacked on five straight points for a 21-6 lead. Back to back points from the Stallions would their last as Wheatmore closed out the set for a 25-8 win.

South Columbus took the first point in set number two, but the Warriors quickly took control behind a hit from Turbyfill. Wheatmore cruised to a 6-1 lead before the Stallions picked up their second and third points of the set. The Stallions added a fourth point to cut the lead to three, but the Warriors quickly pushed the lead back to four. South Columbus scored back to back points to cut the lead to two, but could not get any closer. The Warriors pushed the lead to five and then seven behind a kill from Carson Elliott. The Stallions got the lead back down to four before the Warriors went on a 5-1 run for a 19-11 lead. Wheatmore used a 6-4 run to close out the set and pick up a 25-15 win.

Riding the momentum from their previous two set wins, the Lady Warriors opened set three with a quick 7-2 lead. South Columbus used a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 9-6, but they could not get close enough to take the lead. Wheatmore responded with a 5-0 run for a 14-6 lead. The Warriors maintained their lead and was leading 19-12 when the Stallions tried to make a late push. South Columbus got the lead down to five three times down the stretch, but could never get any closer. The Warriors won the set 25-17 to sweep the Stallions and advance to the third round of the 2A State Volleyball Playoffs.
